Parrot Concepts designs and develops video games and applications to use with parrots on electronic tablets and smart phones. The software is available on both the Android and iOS platforms, so that it can be used on most smart phones and tablets.
Mission Statement: Parrot Concepts was founded on the principle that parrots possess significant intelligence and require sufficient stimulation to thrive in any environment. We produce digital experiences that tap into birds' enjoyment and natural curiosity. Combining the latest scientific research with expert design, we allow parrots to have a variety of experiences with their human companions, as well as entertaining themselves via independent play.
Premises:
- Parrots are motivated by curiosity
- Parrots are motivated by sensory experience
- Food rewards are not essential
- Parrots can understand the meaning of many human words (associate words with the items, actions, and concepts they correspond to)
- Parrots benefit from engagement and mental challenge
Goals:
- Design and build games and apps that parrots willingly interact with
- Utilize the tools we are creating to collect data
about the capacity and capability of parrots - Create experiences that encourage mutually beneficial interactions between parrots and humans
- Foster a culture of respectful interaction with animals that does not infantilize, coerce, or manipulate them
- Prioritize parrots’ choice and agency
Through my observation of the parrots that live with me, parrots I have cared for temporarily, and parrots that live with other people, I have become increasingly aware of the responsibility we have to provide interesting and enriching experiences for them. Their intelligence and curiosity are phenomenal and their mental health depends on keeping their clever brains active. They benefit from the challenging opportunities we create for them.
